One-stop Islamic Tourism Destination
The Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (BKISHHB),
formerly known as the Balai Pameran Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (BPIS),
was officially inaugurated by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal
Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien,
Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam, on 28 Jamadilakhir 1422H, corresponding to 18
August 2001M. The inauguration was held in conjunction with the First International Islamic Expo in
Brunei Darussalam, and the exhibition was hosted at the Darul Ifta’ Brunei Darussalam.

at the Opening Ceremony of the 2019 Knowledge Convention in conjunction with His Majesty's 73rd
Birthday and the Inauguration of the Permanent Building of Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal
Bolkiah on 13 Safar 1441H, corresponding to 12 October 2019, His Majesty expressed his hopes for
BKISHHB to serve as a center for Islamic knowledge heritage.
His Majesty envisioned BKISHHB as a hub that would enliven the culture of knowledge through diverse
academic activities and foster committed collaboration with higher education institutions. To reflect this
vision, His Majesty consented to name the permanent building Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal
Bolkiah (BKISHHB).
In His Majesty’s view, the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (BKISHHB) has the potential
to become a ‘One-stop Islamic Tourism Destination’, emphasizing the importance of solid commitments
from relevant ministries and departments to support its development.
The role of BKISHHB are
as follows:
- Conveying knowledge through
seminars, meetings, research, writing,
translation and learning.
- Preserving the heritage of Islamic
treasures.
- Organising informative exhibition of
the heritage of Islamic treasures.
- Conducting study and academic
research activities.

Description of Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji
Hassanal Bolkiah:
Balai Khazanah Islam
Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah can be described as
a place to store and exhibit the Islamic
collection owned by His Majesty The Sultan and
Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam.
BALAI (بالاي): Balai
means store or building. Thus, Balai can be
referred to as a venue where arts and others are
exhibited.
KHAZANAH (خزانه):
Derived from an Arabic word which refers to a place for storing items or treasures. The term Khazanah
also refers to belongings and possessions that are regarded as valuable and precious.

ISLAM (إسلام): In
general, Islam is the official religion of
Brunei Darussalam. The word Islam signifies a collection that embodies Islamic values and identity.
SULTAN HAJI HASSANAL
BOLKIAH (سلطان حاج حسن البلقيه): This term is
taken in conjunction with the name of His
Majesty Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Bunei
Darussalam as the proprietor of the exhibited
material whether it originally comes from Negara
Brunei Darussalam or abroad.
